Diving on Layang Layang Island – Malaysia

Reading Time: 5min. / Max. Diving Depth: 40m 😉

After a three-quarter hour flight over blue water, a ring-shaped atoll appears. 14 square kilometres in size. 300 miles northwest of Borneo in the South China Sea. Somewhere on the edge of the atoll lies a small island. Artificially created. Excavated from the white sand of the lagoon. For the good of the swallows and the divers. The former not only gave the island its name. Because Layang means sea swallow. But they also conquered the island as a breeding place.

Diving on Layang Layang Island

The Layang Layang Resort is an extremely comfortable resort. It was built in 1995 and now has 86 rooms. Life on such a small island only works with clear rules. Also for the guests. The military base next to the hotel is taboo. A walk along the landing strip to the breeding bird colony is allowed.

Despite the small area, nothing is missing for holiday happiness. The days are filled with three dives from the boat. In between there are meals and at the end mostly a cocktail at sunset.

Layang Layang is a pure diving island. Non-divers have to be content with a book at the pool. But since the island can be easily combined with any other destination in Malaysia, other interests are not neglected.

Diving with Hammerhead Sharks on Layang Layang Island

The dive center has a total of 14 Dive Spots in its program. All accessible in 20 minutes. The sites are drop-offs. With interruptions they only hit the ground at a depth of about 2,000 meters. Two aisles lead out of the lagoon into the open sea. At high tide the boats can pass the reef carefully on a direct way. The nearest is “The Point”. There you will most likely find hammerhead sharks between March and June. In March the rainy season comes to an end. Then the hammerheads will probably mate in the shallow water. Then it is not unusual to find them in schools of 50 to 80 animals. They roam peacefully over the reef. But also in the remaining months the chances of an encounter are good.

Spectacular visibility of up to 50 metres is not uncommon before Layang Layang. Something else is conspicuous. All dive sites have an intact fauna. Hardly any dive goes by without a shark encounter. Whereby you get the grey reef sharks most often before the mask. With a lot of luck a fox shark in deep blue passes by.

Diving on Layang Layang Island

Diving at The Point: Mostly selected as an early dive site. Between March and the end of June you will most likely find hammerhead sharks in schools of up to 80 animals.

Diving at D Wall: Invites you to slide down into the deep blue. Huge sponges decorate the reef. Together with the most beautiful soft and hard corals.

Diving at Gorgonian Forrest: Huge fans stand out impressively against the blue background. Spectacular visibility of at least 30 metres.

Diving at Shark’s Cave: Drop-off. Below a small cave with a white sand bottom at 30 meters. It serves as a resting place for sand rays and whitetip reef sharks. In front of it stand large fan corals.

Diving at the Valley: Interesting especially on the beautifully overgrown plateau. Hard and soft corals, groupers, turtles, barracudas and mackerels.
