The designation Dive Leader describes the minimum requirement determined by an international (ISO 24801-3) and European (EN 14153-3) norm for a diving course serving as introduction to the professional area of recreational diving. A certification of this norm entitles its owner to independently lead a group of certified divers in open water. There are different diving organisations that carry out their training according to this norm. In spite of large differences in part in the implementation, the recognition is thereby guaranteed among organisations. As such, it is possible to continue training further also at another organisation.

The next step would also be a standardised training course to become a diving instructor assistant (ISO 24802-1) or a full-fledged diving instructor (ISO 24802-2).

The following training courses fulfil the requirements of the Dive Leader:

  • American Nitrox Divers International (ANDI) – Divemaster
  • British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC) – Dive Leader
  • Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques (CMAS) – CMAS*** (3 Stern)
  • Global Underwater Explorers (GUE) – Recreational Diver Level 3
  • International Diving Educators Association (IDEA) –  Dive Master
  • International Scuba Diving Academy (ISDA) – Divemaster
  • National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI) – Divemaster
  • National Diving League (NDL) – Divemaster
  • Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) – Divemaster
  • Scuba Schools International (SSI) – Dive Guide
  • Verband Deutscher Tauchlehrer (VDTL) – Gold / Dive Leader
  • World Organisation of Scuba Diving (WOSD) – Dive Leader
