Thermocline

15.03.2017 by Ina Medick

A Thermocline occurs in water, when the density changes.

Why is that important for a diver?

The density of water is very significant for you as a diver because it determines the ambient pressure. Thereby the density is dependent on the water temperature and the salt content above all. What is interesting: Water layers with different densities only mix slowly. For this reason, the density does not constantly change with increasing depth, but a jumpy change happens at the limit between two water layers. This is where the name of this phenomenon is derived from.

Which changes can be expected with a thermocline?

Not only does the pressure change, but also often the temperature, the visibility, the brightness and the salt content.
